Cash worth Rs. 4 lakh was looted from a local resident in broad daylight from outside the HDFC Bank branch on the busy Sutehri road on Wednesday.

An unidentified miscreant pounced on a customer Surjit Kumar, a resident of Central Town, as soon as he came out of the bank after withdrawing the money. The accused ran towards a narrow lane just opposite the bank where two of his accomplices were waiting for him on a motorcycle.

The complainant said he had just stepped out in the parking and was putting the money in his pocket when the packet was snatched from him.

"The snatcher pushed me to the ground and decamped with the cash. I tried to chase him but could not run far as I had sustained an injury in my knee. I saw him fleeing on a motorcycle with two others," he said.

The police cordoned off the area but could not reach the culprits. The snatcher was caught in action in the CCTV cameras installed outside the bank as well as in an electronics shop facing the bank. The youth was wearing a hooded jacket.

Deputy superintendent of police (city) Digvijay Kapil said that an alert had been sounded in all police stations. "Hopefully we will catch the culprits soon," he added. Meanwhile a case was registered at the city police station.
