Short of money, Punjab Mandi Board has stopped all its development works in the state. In an official communication to the administrators and secretaries of market committees in the state, the board secretary has said that no tenders are to be invited for approved works that haven't started yet.

The committees are to make only those payments that are urgent and time-bound. The committed liabilities of many market committees have been found not logical, and until verification, they can't take up any new work. Significant decrease in the yield of paddy has declined the market committees' income from market fee.

Case too hot: Police probe a cover-up?

Summons to Punjab revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia by the Enforcement Directorate has raised questions on the probe by the Punjab Police into the multi-crore drug racket. Busted with the arrest of Anoop Singh Kahlon, an NRI, by the Fatehgarh Sahib police in March 2013, it led to the arrest of alleged kingpin Jagdish Bhola, a dismissed Punjab deputy superintendent of police (DSP), in November last year.
