MC collects Rs. 1.32crore property tax

Though the date for filling property tax returns with rebate of 10% extended till December 31, a huge rush was observed in the municipal corporation (MC) office here on Tuesday.

People were seen standing in queues to file their returns expecting the last day with rebate and staff had to work overtime to clear the queues.

Over Rs. 1.32 crore were collected as property tax on Tuesday of which Rs. 14 lakh were collected online on Tuesday.

The MC had set up extra counters in the main office to accept the tax returns and people also gathered in the zonal offices to file their returns.

Talking to Hindustan Times, MC commissioner MS Chattwal said that the MC had collected property tax to the tune of Rs. 17.22 crore till Tuesday.

"Online portal has proved very helpful for residents. We have received overwhelming response from the residents. About `83lakh people submitted the property tax online. We are regularly counselling people to use this facility through cyber-cafes or through various branches of HDFC bank.," the MC commissioner said.
