Perturbed over Employees Provident Fund (EPF) cut from their payments, contractors engaged by the local municipal corporation on Wednesday held a protest at the civic body’s office and threatened to stop development works that they are carrying out.

The contractors rued that the MC is illegally cutting 10% from their payments in the name of EPF, even as contractors and cooperative societies do not come under the EPF scheme.

They also claimed that their payments were pending for the past three-four months, which had caused heavy losses to them. “Now, 10% reduction from payments has affected our financial condition,” said a leader of the contractor union, Inderjeet Bajaj.

Around 40-50 contractors held the protest, but no municipal corporation official came to talk to them.
“We will stop working for the corporation from Thursday morning if the MC fails to give a satisfactory answer to us,” they said.

Assistant commissioner, building and roads, Chaman Lal refused to comment on the contractors’ claim.
“We have arranged a meeting of contractors with the mayor on Wednesday evening to find out a solution to the problem. Contractors have been asked to present their grievances before the mayor,” he said.

The corporation is under immense pressure as in case contractors go on strike, most development works, which have to be completed before crucial Lok Sabha polls, could be delayed.
