The Congress has intensified its campaign against a marriage palace in Shiv Nagar and has warned that they will intensify their stir, if the allegedly illegal structure is not demolished within two days. The palace is reportedly owned by an influential Akali leader.

A group of Congress councillors, led by leader of opposition, Jagdish Raja, met municipal corporation joint commissioner Anupam Kler and submitted a memorandum, seeking its demolition within two days.

"If the corporation fails to take any action, we would peacefully sit on dharna with our supporters to mark our protest over double-standards of the MC. In the meeting today, the joint commissioner confirmed to us that the construction was illegal, then why is the MC taking so much time to initiate disciplinary proceedings."

Congress councillor from the ward where the structure has set up, Pardeep Singh Rai, said, "The joint commissioner had sought a week for investigations. Inordinate delay in this particular case is not right and indicates some sort of nefarious design. We would not let the house to adopt dual standards towards illegal construction. If the MC can demolish constructions in other parts of the city then why it is not taking any action on this."

"This marriage palace, built in nearly 2.5 acres has been built just 35 feet away from the Ferozepur-Jalandhar railway track in Shiv Nagar locality of my ward, setting aside all building by-laws. The owner has not even got his construction plan approved. The prescribed fee for a marriage palace has also not been paid," said Ajay Kumar, chairman of OBC wing of district Congress committee.

"We have clues that the influential Akali owner of this marriage palace had been pressuring the corporation to get it regularised by paying some token money. He has also painted the naem of a nursery at the boundary wall to fool people and that too on the suggestion of some corporate officials," he added.

"I have been raising the issue in nall meetings of the house.  In my ward only, at least 23 such illegal constructions are being developed under the nose of the MC," Rai added.

"We had moved complaints regarding violation of building by-laws in the case of marriage palace to the railway ministry also," Rai further added.

When contacted by HT, area inspector Yogesh Chadha said, "My team has submitted a report about illegality of this premise to the authority. Challans have also been issued to other illegally constructed properties. We are awaiting further directions from MC officials."

Joint commissioner Anupam Kler said, "We have received a report from the staff deputed to look into the matter. In a day-or-two, I will table the report to the commissioner and will thereafter take a decision on this property."
