Members of the Punjab Students Union (PSU) and Government Colleges Guest Faculty Teachers Association on Monday gheraoed the residence of minister of forests and wildlife preservation Bhagat Chunni Lal to demand full fee waiver for Dalit students and girls, early release of pending scholarships, rollback of hike in fees, and release of salaries to guest faculties from government treasuries.

The minister was reportedly not at home. The agitating workers reached there in a procession raising slogans against the state government and sat on a dharna outside the house.

"For a long time, we have been on the path of agitation for our genuine demands. But the government is not paying any heed. The funds received for dalits have reportedly been diverted by the state government to other projects," said Gurmukh Singh Maan, president of the union.

"If the government fails to announce any relief package for us, we will block roads on February 18 at Mohali," he added. Several teacher union representatives were present on this occasion.

Case too hot: Police probe a cover-up?

Summons to Punjab revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia by the Enforcement Directorate has raised questions on the probe by the Punjab Police into the multi-crore drug racket. Busted with the arrest of Anoop Singh Kahlon, an NRI, by the Fatehgarh Sahib police in March 2013, it led to the arrest of alleged kingpin Jagdish Bhola, a dismissed Punjab deputy superintendent of police (DSP), in November last year.
