A 17-year-old girl and her 10-year-old cousin were killed in a road accident, when their two-wheeler was hit by a tractor trolley near Sodal Temple railway crossing on Friday.

Anmol (17), a student of BA 1, was coming back after picking her two twin cousin brothers Saksham and Sarthak from Seth Hukum Chand School around noon. When they reached near Sodal Temple, an overloaded tractor trolley hit their Activa scooter, police sources said.

Anmol and Saksham fell off the two-wheeler and got crushed under the trolley, ADCP Naresh Dogra, who too visited the spot, told HT. Sarthak received minor bruises in the accident, Dogra said.

The driver of the trolley, Bhagwan Das, who initially fled from the spot, was later arrested and a case under section 304A was registered against him, the ADCP said.

Meanwhile, a pall of gloom descended on Subhash Nagar locality, where Saksham's family lived. Resident even protested against the plying of tractor trolleys in the inner parts of the city.

Last year, son of senior deputy mayor Kamaljit Singh Bhatia was killed in an accident involving a tractor trolley in Avtar Nagar locality.

Drug pangs of Punjab: Punjabi NRIs part of well-knit narcotics circuit

It is an open secret. Acknowledged for their enterprising skills the world over, some Punjabi NRIs, mainly in Canada and the UK, are spreading the illicit multi-crore drug racket in the international market through hawala transactions, also harming the socio-economic fabric of their own motherland.
