The main accused of Friday's four killings, Baljinder Singh, a resident of Gurhe village near Goraya, was found lying unconscious on the roadside near Jamalpur village, apparently hit by an unidentified vehicle on Friday night.

Passersby admitted him to the civil hospital here.

He had fled the spot allegedly after killing his wife, daughter and two other members of his in-laws' family at Kotrani village in the wee hours of Friday. Two other members were injured in the attack.

Kapurthala SSP Inderbir Singh said, "We came to know about the accident and his being admitted to the civil hospital on Saturday morning. Doctors told us that he was not in a position to give a statement as he had received injuries on head and other body parts. He was apparently hit by an unidentified vehicle on the road. We have deployed police at the hospital and he would be arrested once he regains consciousness. After interrogating him, we will arrest the other accused."
