Northern Railways has decided to chalk out a safety and operational plan in wake of foggy conditions by cancelling a few trains in the region and through a multi-pronged strategy.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, RK Rana, public relations officer, Northern Railways, New Delhi, said the Delhi-Ambala-Amritsar and Kalka sections remained a highly fog-prone rail section, so the department had cancelled 13 trains, partially cancelled three and diverted two trains, which were generally affected in such situations, from January 1.

Rana said, "The railways has also overhauled its safety machinery to ensure zero failure of its equipment and working systems. Special arrangements have been made to ensure passenger convenience and safe running of trains during foggy weather."

He said other precautions included monitoring and upkeep of signal systems for which drives and training programmes of the train crew and frontline staff had been undertaken to ensure utmost safety in foggy weather.

"To indicate fog, a vision test object (VTO) is set up at stations, 180 metres from the starter signal of the station. If the stationmaster or superintendent is unable to see the VTO clearly, fog is declared. We have also provided technology-aided fog-pass devices to all running and frontline staff to ensure absolute safety in train operations on a trial basis," he said, adding that emergency stop buttons had been fitted in 107 locomotives by the Electric Loco Shed of Ghaziabad and Ludhiana.

He said the additional passenger reservation system counters would also be opened to facilitate passengers seeking refund in case of cancellation and trains running late for more than three hours during this period.

All stations in the northern region have been provided with well-trained inquiry officers.
