A day after farmers heaved a sigh of relief when procurement agencies were allotted 29 rice mills to stock paddy, drizzling and strong winds brought them a bad news.
Rice millers refused to stock paddy in their mills on Friday.
Perturbed over slow lifting of paddy from grain markets, deputy commissioner Varun Roojam held an emergency meeting with nearly 42 rice millers on Friday at the district administrative complex in the presence of district food and supply controller Rakesh Singla and district managers of various procurement agencies.
Sources said Roojam tried to press rice shellers to lift paddy from the markets immediately as the markets were turning storage yards and drizzling was damaging the paddy.
Officials failed to succeed after millers refused to store paddy in their godowns due to reports of high moisture and discoloured paddy arriving in the markets.
Seeking anonymity, a rice miller said all millers had urged the state government to give relaxation in terms of moisture and discolouration of paddy so that they did not face difficulty while supplying it to the government.
He said the administration officials were trying to pressurise millers, but all of them were against storing paddy in its present condition.
Another rice miller said till the government did not give them any relaxation, they would not lift the paddy.
He said one of the rice millers had shown samples of paddy to Roojam at the meeting, after which the official showed concern.
He said 29 rice millers who gave their consent to lift paddy were pressurised.
Till Friday, only 8,985MT paddy was lifted out of a total of 67,427 MT arrived at the grain markets of the district.
Talking to Hindustan Times, Roojam said: “Around 29 rice millers will start lifting paddy from the markets, but weather still remains a major concern.”
He said once the weather got cleared, the lifting would start picking up. “The administration is in constant touch with the remaining 13 rice millers and within a day, they will also be allotted to agencies,” Roojam added.
