The city police on Monday claimed to have busted a gang of contract-killers with the arrest of five of its members. The police came across the gang while investigating the murderous attack on two cousins on November 20.
A group of nine people was involved in the attack. Karanveer Singh, a railway contractor, after seeing one of the attackers pointing a revolver at him and his cousin Maninder Singh, threw a chair on him and escaped the gunshot.
Addressing mediapersons here on Monday, additional deputy commissioner of police Parminder Singh Bhandal and assistant commissioner of police Manpreet Singh Dhillon said that the attackers were hired for killing Vikramveer Singh and Karanveer Singh by one Parshotam Lal alias Lalli, a resident of Hoshiarpur district.
“Incidentally, on that night Vikramveer was late in reaching the office and I was with my cousin my Maninder. The attackers mistook Maninder for Vikramveer and attacked us,” Karanveer said.
The police said that the gang members had been paid `1.40 lakh for eliminating Vikramveer.
Those arrested have been identified as Pawan Kumar, Kulwinder Singh, both residents of Hoshiarpur district, Sandeep Singh, Harmandeep Singh and Mangal Singh. They were working for some Gurmail Singh, a resident of Ferozepur district.
The police had identified the accused from the CCTV footage acquired from the victims' office and another office situated near the parking.
“Those arrested have a criminal background but never fell in police hands before. Raids are being conducted to arrest other members of this gang. We have also recovered a double-barrel rifle, a country made pistol and a sword from the accused, besides some live cartridges,” ACP Dhillon said.
All the accused have been booked under section 307(attempt to murder) of the IPC and different sections of the Arms Act.
