Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Partap Singh Bajwa lambasted the SAD-BJP government for not taking preventive flood protection measures, thus putting to risk hundreds of villages situated along the Beas and Satluj rivers.

Addressing a meeting of party workers here on Saturday, he said, due to the state government's negligence, thousands of acres of land had been submerged in flood water and numerous families were displaced, adding that no arrangements were made for the rescue of marooned people. He demanded adequate compensation to the affected people.

Bajwa said that chief minister Parkash Singh Badal always called himself a servant of the people but had no time to visit the flood hit areas. He said that Badal was misleading people with political gimmicks like 'Sangat Darshan' whereas he was not able to reply to questions raised by Congress MLAs during these programmes in Gidderbaha and Muktsar. Rather he had to cancel some of the programmes due to the fear of getting exposed, he added.

He said that the chief minister had no control over the administration and people were not getting any solution to their day-to-day problems.

He said that SAD-BJP government had betrayed all sections of the society and not fulfilled any of the promises made during the elections.

"The state government has imposed heavy taxes on common people. The power rates in Punjab were highest in the country, the VAT base rate of 5 percent is highest in Punjab against 4 percent in all other states, and the rates of property tax are highest here. Punjab has slipped to the 6th position from 2nd in the economic performance.  The health and education sectors were in shambles. Punjab is now listed among the states with worst law and order," said Bajwa.

He said that despite such a poor show, Badal was claiming that the performance of his government was the best in the country.

He said that mining mafia was flourishing in Punjab with active involvement and patronage of the SAD and BJP leaders and the police. He revealed that a central government team would soon visit Punjab for on the spot inspection of mining sites where illegal mining was going on.

Minister of State for health, Santosh Chowdhary; Mukerian MLA, Rajnish Kumar and district president, Sunder Sham Arora also addressed the rally.
