Inmates of central jail in Ludhiana last week learnt some techniques of baking from hotel management student of Lovely Professional University (LPU). The session was held under the chief minister's project to explore the possibility of a bakery unit inside the prison.
The state government had earlier engaged the university to impart training to inmates under the prisoner reformation and rehabilitation scheme.
LPU chancellor Ashok Mittal said the professors of the hotel management department regularly visited the bakery unit established at the jail premises to impart training to the prisoners.
"Home affairs principal secretary Dhanbir Singh Bains had inspected the trial run of the bakery unit. The prisoners have turned into skillful bakers and have already started producing biscuits, breads, buns, rusk and allied products under the brand 'Anand'," he said, adding that the aim of the exercise was to impart productive skills to prisoners help them get associated with the mainstream society, on the lines of the Tihar jail model.
ADGP (prisons) RP Meena said, "Initially, the bakery products will be used in state jails. As the production increases, the department of jails will make arrangements for further sale."
