In its one of the ambitious project of Punjab government, the public works department (PWD) has appointed Consulting Engineering Services (CES) Private Limited, New Delhi, to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) of proposed four-laning of 82 km Ropar-Nawanshahr-Phagwara, which will submit its report in two months to the department.

On the other hand, the department has also prepared reports about acquisition of land needed for stretching the existing road but the officials remained tight-lipped about revealing the required land as it can cause public outrage.

Requesting anonymity, top officials of PWD department, revealed that CES would give DPR of the project before March 31, 2013 after that the work of land acquisition would start.

They said that CES would measure several elements, including need of number of flyovers, elevated roads, service lanes and others new things that would be reported in DPR.

However, they said that presenly, the department had proposed to develop three elevated roads starting from Garhi Bypass Road to Langroya village, Langroya to Nawanshahr town and from Nawanshahr town to Banga territorial limit.

"A Railway under Bridge (RUB) has also been projected at railway lines adjoining Nawanshahr co-operative Sugar Mill", officials said.

They said that a budget of Rs. 1,200 crore would be needed for the completion of the project and the construction work would start next year.

Earlier in 2009, the Punjab government had decided to connect Jalandhar with Mohali via the Machhiwara-Phagwara Express Highway, but this project was shelved after farmers, whose land was to be acquired for this highway, protested. Then the government decided to develop the existing Ropar-Nawanshahr-Phagwara into an express highway.

They said that the road would make commuting from Doaba, Majha region to Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport in Mohali easier.

They said public works department Sharanjeet Singh Dhillon, state PWD minister who is chief guest at district level function on Republic Day, would discuss the project with officials concerned.
