By declaring chief parliamentary secretary (CPS) and its Adampur MLA Pawan Kumar Tinu, 47, as its candidate for Lok Sabha polls, the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has played the best card available in its kitty for Jalandhar reserved seat keeping in mind all the factors including of caste and the election management.

A former BSP leader, Tinu, who joined SAD in 2005 after getting stupendous response of over 1.5 lakh votes in the  2004 Lok Sabha polls that he contested on the BSP ticket from erstwhile Phillour parliamentary segment, is the fist-time SAD MLA from Adampur. In the 2012 assembly polls, he defeated Congress candidate with a record margin of 19,306 votes.

Political experts believe that Tinu suits best in the "Sukhbir style of politics" as the SAD chief is famous for trying all weapons available to defeat the opponent.

A powerful leader of the Ravidassiya community and popular in the Adampur segment for organising 'sangat darshan' programmes in all villages, Tinu will certainly disturb the equations for the probable face of the Congress Mohinder Singh Kaypee.

Kaypee also represents Ravidassiya and this factor went in his favour during the 2009 general elections, when he defeated Sufi Punjabi singer Hans Raj Hans, who is from the Valmiki community. Kaypee had received a decisive lead in the city, while Hans had an edge in rural areas.

If the Congress chooses Kaypee, that seems certain for now, it would be the second face-off between Tinu and Kaypee, as in the 1997 assembly polls as well, the CPS contested as BSP candidate from Jalandhar South and received more than 26,000 votes (almost equal to Kaypee) and become the reason of the Congress' defeat.

Apart from the development-oriented track record of his performance, Tinu also enjoys good rapport with the alliance partner BJP, that rules the municipal corporation.

This was the reason that after he was declared the candidate on Tuesday evening, leaders from all factions of SAD and BJP were seen beelining towards the residence of the CPS.

Moreover, with the anti-Congress wave visible in the entire country, the conditions are favourable for Tinu, because this time the SAD-BJP combine holds all the nine assembly segments falling under Jalandhar parliamentary area.

Tinu said he would formally announce the start of his poll campaign by discussing the matter with all senior SAD-BJP leaders from the seat.
