Sangrur victorious in State Rural Games

Sangrur lifted the overall trophy by getting 13 points in the Swami Vivekananda Punjab State Rural Games for Girls (Under-16), which concluded at Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium at Burlton Park here on Saturday.

Mansa and Muktsar Sahib tied second as both got 12 points each.

State forest minister Chunni Lal Bhagat gave away prizes to the winners.

Exhorting the young participants to adopt sports as their career, Bhagat said, "The state government has decided to increase the reward for Olympic gold winners from `1 crore to `2.25 crore, and as per the new sports policy, we will provide government jobs to achievers in sports in recognition of their contribution to the state."

"Besides, for higher education, 3% of the seats have been reserved for sportspersons," he added. Sports department deputy director Sohan Lal Lotey and assistant director (sports) Rupinder Singh were also present at the closing ceremony.
