Taking cognisance of media reports on the killing of assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Gurdev Singh on the national highway on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes has issued a notice to the police and Kapurthala administration, as the victim belonged to an Other Backward Class (OBC).

“As per Article 338 (10) of the Constitution of India, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes shall be construed as including references to such Other Backward Classes as the President may,” the panel vice-chairman stated in the notice.

Through the notice issued to the inspector general of police, Jalandhar zone, Kapurthala deputy commissioner and senior superintendent of police, the commission sought their personal intervention to look into the matter on priority and asked for an action taken report (ATR) in the case by April 3.
