Environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Friday to seek his intervention in ensuring that industries are not allowed to release effluents into water bodies, like in the case of Kali Bein rivulet in the state.

In the meeting, which went on for nearly 20 minutes, Seechewal told the Prime Minister that most of the sewerage treatment plants, set up with financial help from the centre, were non-functional due to the apathetic approach of the state government.

Jalandhar MP Mohinder Singh Kaypee accompanied Seechewal to the meeting.

"The Rs. 2,200-crore project to clean the state's river was to be completed by November 2011, but red-tape seems to have stifled it," Seechewal said.

Seechewal handed over a letter to the Prime Minister, detailing the plight of water sources in Punjab.

"Untreated sewage of villages and towns and toxic chemical wastes of industries falls into Kali Bein, Kala Sanghia Drain of Jalandhar, Buddha Nallah of Ludhiana, the Satluj and other natural water resources. The same is being supplied as drinking water to Malwa region of Punjab and Bikaner, Ganganagar, Jaisalmer and Hanumangarh districts of Rajasthan.

Cancer, hepatitis, gastroenteritis and circulatory diseases are common in these regions," he has submitted.

"PM has assured us that he will take all possible steps to conserve water resources," Seechewal said.
