The Punjab mandi board has initiated the process to upgrade the Shahkot-Punia link road under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).

Jalandhar executive engineer MK Dheer said a 10.25-km road section is being upgraded under the scheme and widened to 33 feet from existing 22. Land owners on both sides of the route have been asked to donate 5.6-foot-wide strip on each side for road widening.

The land owners have been asked to fill gift deeds to give away part of the property to the PM's road development programme. The authorities concerned said it would be for the benefit of the villagers in particular and the public at large. "The subdivisional officer of the mandi board has suggested the format for land donation and registering donation deeds," said Shahkot naib tehsildar Pardeep Kumar.

Of the cost of upgrade, the union government will contribute 60% and the state 40%. The road connects Shahkot legislator Ajit Singh's native village, Kohar, with Shahkot and Punia. Presently, it is a muddy track and not motorable.

Mahila Cong leaders unhappy at Grewal’s ‘elevation’

Though the Congress high command is yet to formally announce the name of the next chief of the Punjab State Mahila Congress, the reported move to appoint Jalandhar Congress leader Kittu Grewal to the post has not gone down well with many local senior Mahila Congress leaders as they have threatened to tender their resignations.
