Smuggling of liquor is now compoundable offence

Empowering the excise department officers to compound offences for smuggling liquor, Section 61 of the Punjab Excise Act (which provides the imposition of certain minimum punishment) has been amended by the state government.


Assistant excise and taxation commissioner, Jalandhar, in communication to the commissioner of police and senior superintendent of police said every district had been given power to compound the crime.

It says now accuse can file an application or affidavit before police officials or in court. The composition fee would be `5,000 subject to a minimum fine of `1 lakh for smuggling one carton of liquor. He who is caught smuggling liquor will not be arrested, instead let go by paying a fine on the spot.
