Sources said the victim, Manju, was sitting on a cot in the fields of a former sarpanch, where she used to work, when accused Baljinder, 24, allegedly dragged her inside cattle shed and slit her throat. Manju died on the spot and the accused fled the spot.

Chabbewal deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Kulwant Singh Randhawa said that inquiries from the village revealed that Baljinder used to often approach Manju but she never responded.

Earlier, the village panchayat intervened on more than one occasion when the two families sparred over the issue, the DSP said.

He said a case had been registered under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and search was on to arrest the accused.

Meanwhile, the woman's body was shifted to the Hoshiarpur civil hospital where a post-mortem would be conducted on Friday.
