After Jaswinder Kumar, 35, a resident of Gorakhpur village, tried to commit suicide by consuming a pesticide inside the city police station on Saturday morning, the police have been hard-pressed to find a single line of credible evidence to deny his claims of torture.

There Is confusion on the amount that  Jaswinder stole. In a statement to this reporter (HT has a recording of it), the suspect had said that he had committed a theft of Rs. 60,000 along with four others. He had also alleged that the police were forcing him to accept a libaility of Rs. 60 lakh.

On Saturday, DSP Satish Malhotra had maintained that Jaswinder's employed had not mentioned a sopecific amount, but the theft was in lakhs of rupees. The employer Gurcharan Arora had told this reporter that he had lost Rs. 4-5 lakh by the theft from Jaswinder and his accomplices.

However, in the FIR (a copy is with HT) registered with city police station, the theft has been reported to be Rs. 10-12 lakh.

Officially, the police is yet to record the statement of Jaswinder, even though this reporter met and took his statement on Saturday.

Repeated calls to SHO (city) Parshotam Lal went unanswered. The mobile number of DSP (city) Satish Malhotra was switched off.
