The teachers and other school employees in Punjab who are absent for one year or more will be sacked summarily and their posts declared vacant.

The Punjab education department had decided to end their services without the customary formalities, education minister Dr Daljit Singh Cheema told HT on Saturday during his visit to the city. “If they are on a holiday for a year, replacements will be hired, and once back, the employees will have to first report to the director of public instructions (DPI), who will decide whether they stay or not.”

The department would give a showcause notice to the teachers found absent for three months or more. “We will open a separate branch in the department to prepare and check the absentee data. Long-term absentees will not get the same station back,” said Cheema.

“The defaulting staffers will be removed summarily this time,” said the minister. Earlier, sacking was a long procedure that involved issuing notices to seek explanation, and instituting inquiries to take disciplinary action. “Keeping in view the loss of studies, it was decided to sack the defaulting employees in one go,” said the education minister.

A separate recruitment cell will come up to keep track of teacher employment, vacant posts, and the availability of staff. Nearly 1.70 lakh teaching and non-teaching employees have retired recently.
