Tension prevailed in Hussainpur village near here on Monday on the issue of cremation of a woman by residents of an adjoining Giddarpindi village. Heavy police force from Mehatpur, Nurmahal and Nakodar was rushed to village.

Hussainpur village residents started 'path' of Sukhmani Sahib in the cremation ground to stop cremation of Kartari (90), wife of Sadhu Singh of Giddarpindi.

Residents Jasmeet Singh, ex-sarpanch Pritam Singh, lambardar Darbara Singh and Nanak Singh told mediapersons that the cremation ground measuring 8 kanals was the property of Hussainpur village. But three village residents gave 5 marlas of land from the cremation ground to Giddarpindi residents for cremation six months ago at the behest of a local SAD leader. They alleged that Giddarpindi residents tried to encroach upon more than 1 kanal of land and also demolished a shed and boundary wall against the wishes of Hussainpur residents.

Hussainpur residents say that they would not allow cremation of bodies from another village in their village.

Phillaur SDM Jasbir Singh, who is holding additional charge of Nakodar, and SP(D) Rajinder Singh reached the spot and held negotiations with the warring parties to buy truce.

The SP said that it had been decided that the body of Kartari would be cremated at the Hussainpur village cremation ground and a alternative land would be provided to Giddarpindi village for cremating their dead in the future.
