The vigilance bureau caught a bone specialist of the Kapurthala Civil Hospital while taking bribe from a patient's son on Saturday.

On the complaint of Ravijot Kumar, a resident of Kapurthala whose father Surinder Kumar was in jail and referred to the civil hospital, the vigilance team caught bone specialist Dr Desraj who asked Ravijot for money to let his father stay in the hospital for treatment.

As per information, Surinder Kumar was involved in drug smuggling. When police raided his house, he jumped from the terrace as a result of which, he fractured his legs.

Owing to non availability of a bone specialist in modern jail, a health team referred Surinder to the civil hospital on August 12, 2014.

Dr Desraj demanded Rs. 20,000 as bribe from Ravijot to provide treatment to his father in the hospital. The case was settled in Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 5,000 was given as advance to the doctor on August 18. The doctor then demanded the remaining amount of Rs. 10,000 from Ravijot, threatening him that he would shift his father to the jail if he failed to give money.

Ravijot lodged a complaint with the deputy superintendent of police (vigilance) Kapurthala, Kulwant Rai who, along with two government school principals as government witness and one shadow witness, caught the doctor red handed taking money from Ravijot on Saturday morning.

Police have arrested the doctor and a case has been registered under various sections of Prevention of Corruption Act.
