The commissionerate police have formed a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate as how Ramneet Singh Uppal ‘Romy’ (24), convicted for the attempt to murder on Burundi student Yannick Nihangaza that left him comatose for two years until his death recently, reportedly managed to jump the parole and flew out of the country.

The SIT will be headed by deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Naveen Singla. Additional deputy commissioner of police (crime) Satpal Singh Bhangu and another police officer, who is yet to be named, will also be part of it. The city police faced immense criticism for negligence as how Romy fled out of the country after jumping parole which he had got for attending a relative’s wedding.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports also emerged that Rantaj Singh, one of the accused in the case who was not arrested, has also fled out of the country giving a slip to the city police.

Rantaj has been declared a proclaimed offender in the case.

The second proclaimed offender in the case, Jaskaran Singh Kalsi, alias Jassa, who had flown to Australia on a student visa after the incident, was arrested in New South Wales, Australia. The city police will soon contact the state and central governments to get him extradited to India.

When contacted, police commissioner Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh said, “We have formed an SIT under the supervision of DCP Singla and it will start its probe on Monday.” Singh said since there was not any confirmed news about Romy’s fleeing the country, the police have started collecting information about his whereabouts.

The police commissioner claimed that they had also unconfirmed reports that Rantaj had also gone abroad. In October last year, a local fast-track court had held seven attackers, including Ramneet Singh Uppal, guilty of attempt to murder.
