Three militants holed up in a house were killed by forces in Shopian district of Kashmir as the over night encounter in which an army major and a soldier lost their lives ended Saturday.

The gunfight began late on Friday night after the police and ar my got inputs that the militants were hiding in KarewaManlo village, about 55km from Srinagar.

“We cordoned off the area. A gunfight ensued and two militants were killed on Friday,” Shopian SP, Showkat Shah told HT. Major Mukund Vardharajan and a jawan were also critically hurt in the gunfight. They later succumbed to their injuries on Saturday.

The exchange of fire stopped during the night after the two militants were killed. However, fighting re-erupted on Saturday morning, and a third militant was killed. The house in which the militants were trapped was destroyed in the fighting.

The slain militants were identified as Muhammad Asif Wani, Abdul Haq and Shabir Ahmad. “All the militants were locals belonging to Hizbul Mujahideen,” Shah added.

Ahmad was a murder convict who escaped police custody and later joined the militant group while Haq was a recent recruit.

Wani had been active with the outfit for three years and was a close associate of Hizb commander Altaf Baba, who was killed in Rajpora last year, Shah said.

The incident comes a day after a polling officer was killed and five people were wounded when militants opened fired at a vehicle carrying election staff in Shopian, which is part of the Anantnag constituency that went to polls on April 24.
