Traffic suspended on Srinagar-Jammu national highway

Traffic was temporarily suspended on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway on Thursday due to leakage from a gas tanker which turned turtled near Jawahar tunnel here.


"A LPG tanker turned turtle at the Titanic Post near the tunnel on the highway at around 11 pm last night," a Traffic Department spokesman said.

The tanker skidded downhill and started leaking the gas, following which the authorities decided to suspend traffic on the 294-km arterial highway, the only all-weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, he said.

The traffic was suspended on the highway after the incident and authorities swung into action to prevent spread of the gas, he said, adding that the traffic would be allowed to ply on the highway in the afternoon.

More bodies found, toll touches 277

The death toll in the Jammu and Kashmir floods has reached 277, including 79 deaths in the Kashmir Valley. The figure was confirmed by chief minister Omar Abdullah on Friday. Rescue workers have so far recovered 74 bodies since water started receding from different parts of the Valley.
