Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national council member Pavitar Singh on Tuesday alleged that party Delhi MLA and Punjab affairs co-incharge Jarnail Singh had gathered “unaccounted for” party funds prior to the 2015 Delhi assembly elections.
Addressing a press conference here, Jarnail, accompanied by NRI Harpal Singh, said he had deposited a cheque for Rs 1 lakh in Jarnail’s bank account in January 2015. “The money was supposed to be for the party. He kept demanding cash but we insisted on paying in cheque. Finally, he gave an account number which we later found was his personal and not of the party,” said Pavitar showing details of the transaction. Pavitar added that he was never given receipt for the amount he donated.
Harpal added that he too gave Rs 50,000 for Delhi polls to Jarnail for which he never gave him any receipt.
When contacted, Jarnail said he was the AAP candidate in January 2015 and had requested party volunteers and supporters to gather funds for elections. “What is wrong in that? I don’t understand what Pavitar is trying to prove? He is the one who deposited the money. I did not force him or did not promise a quid pro quo. And when the transaction is through a bank, how does it matter if a receipt was given or not. I have declared everything to the election commission. Regarding Harpal, I don’t even know who he is,” he added.
Pavitar said that he was ready to face a defamation suit to prove the authenticity of his allegations. “Let the party take me to court. I will prove it that Jarnail collected money from volunteers,” he said.
