The Division Number 4 police on Saturday booked former sarpanch of Jassian village and his wife for embezzlement of funds meant for pension to widows and old age people.

Police have registered a case under Section 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant, or by banker, merchant or agent) of the Indian penal Code (IPC) against former sarpanch Davinder Singh, and his wife Sarbjit Kaur following the statement of Harjit Singh of the same village.

In his complaint, Harjit stated that the accused during his term as sarpanch embezzled funds sent by social security department meant for giving pension to widows and elderly people.

He added that instead of distributing the pension among beneficiaries, accused used to grab it.

He also alleged that the accused grabbed the pension of dead people by showing them alive in records.

Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Iqbal Singh, who is investigating the matter, said, “Investigation is on to know the amount embezzled. Police will arrest the accused soon.”
