The Akal Takht jathedar has advised leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) never to give up their Panthic identity and ideology in “following the BJP” for the sake of winning elections.

In an informal chat with the media here on Thursday, jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh lamented that the Akali leaders chose to follow ally BJP “and in the process gave up their Panthic outlook, just to win the Delhi assembly polls”.

For the loss of four Akali candidates in Delhi (three on BJP symbol), he held the BJP responsible, and underlined the unease with Dera Sacha Sauda: “Had the BJP not sought the support of the Sirsa-based dera, the Akali candidates would have won.”

“This will happen if you forget that you are a party of the Sikh Panth. This is a lesson for the Akalis,” he added.

When a reporter drew the jathedar's attention to reports that certain Akali leaders donned the saffron cap of BJP’s parent body Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) while campaigning in Delhi, he said, “This again is a case of forgetting your own identity, and they (Akalis) have paid the price.”
