An army jawan died in an encounter with infiltrators on the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch sector on Wednesday.
One terrorist was also killed in the gunfight, the first incident of firing since Indian and Pakistani army officials held a meeting in Poonch in September following a surge in cross-border violence.
“An infiltration attempt was foiled in Krishan Ghati sector on Wednesday afternoon. Lance Naik Govind Singh, who was seriously injured, succumbed to his injuries. The area has been cordoned off and a search operation is going on,” said SN Acharya, officiating defence spokesperson in Jammu.
Acharya said a group of infiltrators started firing at troops posted along the LoC after the latter noticed their movement.
The body of the militant was recovered, he said, adding the gunfight was on till last reports came in.
In September brigadier-level talks were held between India and Pakistan at Chakan-da-Bagh in Poonch, and both the armies decided to exercise restraint and take steps to defuse tension.
The meeting was held after heavy firing from both the sides along the LoC in Rajouri and Poonch sectors.
