In a fit of jealousy, a man, who reached Dhanbad from Ludhiana on Friday to visit his wife, attacked her and his mother-in-law with acid suspecting her of infidelity.
As fate may have it, Shankar Bhuian, who hails from Nawada, Bihar, and is a chemical factory worker in Ludhiana, suffered some acid burns himself and landed all three in Patliputra Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) here with burns on the face, chest and body.
This incident of domestic violence took place around 9 am at Kendua New Colony around 10 kilometers from Dhanbad city under the Kenduadih police station.
According to the police, Bhuian arrived in Dhanbad on the Ludhiana-Dhanbad express train on Friday morning. After reaching home, he saw his wife Gauri (25) busy in a conversation on her mobile phone and assumed that she was talking to her paramour.
He first locked the room and thrashed his wife. Then he threw acid on her face, which he had brought with him from Ludhiana.
Hearing the screams of Gauri, her mother, Kunti Devi (45) broke into the room to save her, following which Shankar also threw acid at Devi, and some of it spilled on him as well.
All three were brought to PMCH by local police. Both Gauri and Kunti are undergoing treatment.
"The incident is a fallout of infidelity on part of the female. However, it is a matter of investigation," said deputy superintendent of police (DSP) law and order Amit Kumar, who took the victims' statement.
While talking to HT, Shankar said, "We got married in 2007. However, after the wedding, Gauri was not willing to move either to Ludhiana where I worked, nor to my native place in Nawada district in Bihar where my family resided. My mother-in-law also supported Gauri in this.”
He alleged that Gauri has an illicit relationship with a man in the same locality. However, he refused to name his wife's paramour.
However, Gauri refuted the allegations of her husband and said he had concocted the story to defame her. She claimed that Shankar had a second wife and thus had refused to come with him to Ludhiana.
Police have taken Shankar into custody and are interrogating him.
