A shopkeeper (30) set himself ablaze at Subhash Nagar here on Saturday after trying to burn a mother of three, his former employee, for declining his marriage proposal. Neighbours moved both to Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), where the woman, Jahanvi (33), was discharged after first aid and the man, Vinay Kumar, was reported to have 70% burns. His condition remains critical.
“Vinay sells water purifiers at Gautam Nagar and Jahanvi of Subhash Nagar was his employee until she quit seven months ago,” said Basti Jodhewal station house officer (SHO) inspector Ashok Kumar. “Vinay was in one-sided love with Jahanvi and had proposed her many times. This is what forced Jahanvi to leave the job.”
On Saturday, Vinay went to her house to tell her again to accept him and divorce her husband. When she refused, he sprinkled petrol on her from a bottle and tried to burn her. He poured the leftover fuel on himself and set self ablaze. Their screams brought the neighbours out and they doused the flames.
The SHO said police would take appropriate action after recording the statement of both. It is Ludhiana’s second similar case in four days. On August 9, a man, Gurbachan Verma, kidnapped the son (6) of a Millar Ganj woman who had spurned him. On August 11, police arrested him and rescued the child.
