Enraged at being dumped by girlfriend, Guriqbal Singh (35) allegedly shot her dead from close range on Kapurthala road near Sports College in Jalandhar.

The woman identified as Neetu (30), a resident of Guru Nanak Nagar, was moving towards the ATM situated on the road along with her five-year-old niece on Thursday night when Guriqbal, a resident of the same locality, came from behind in his car and fired two shots on her and fled. The murder was committed with a .32 bore revolver.

The woman died on the spot even as her five-year-old niece started screaming. People gathered there informed the police and the family members. Though, originally it seemed a case with no leads, the city police managed to trace the alleged killer within 24 hours. It zeroed in on Guriqbal after it was learnt that he was in a relationship with the girl.

Police sources said that when the police checked lists of area people who owned licensed .32 bore revolvers, it was found that Singh's father had a licenced weapon of a similar bore. This information helped the police establish that Guriqbal committed the crime.

The police nabbed the accused near the Vidhi railway crossing. The accused wanted to move to Amritsar, but his vehicle met with an accident. ADCP-1 RK Sharma said that a case of murder has been registered against Guriqbal. The accused admitted before the media that he killed her as she ditched him.

Sources said that the deceased had married with Aashu of Vijay Nagar around nine years ago and had been divorced a year ago.

The accused was also a married man, whose wife had left him. The accused ran a family business.
