Defeated Akali candidate Bhagwan Das Juenja has suffered a double blow, since his elder son, Gurpal Juneja, died of heart attack on Sunday night.
Gurpal, 43, an active social worker like his father, leaves behind his wife and son. Because of the tragedy, no one from the Juneja family or senior Akali leaders turned up at the counting centre on Monday to hear the assembly byelection result and even Congress candidate Preneet Kaur cancelled her victory celebrations to attend the funeral.
Deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia, a family friend of the Junejas, were at the cremation with cabinet ministers Surjit Rakhra and Dr Daljit Cheema, besides other prominent leaders and bureaucrats.
They conveyed condolences to the Juneja family. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal also mourned the death and prayed for peace to the departed soul. The Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Captain Amarinder Singh, and his wife, Preneet Kaur, stated that it was extremely sad that Gurpal had died so young.
Preneet Kaur, who cancelled her victory celebrations as mark of respect to the departed soul, said it was not the loss of Juneja family alone, since in Gurpal, Patiala had also lost a son.
