Justice Ashutosh Mohunta on Saturday took over as the acting chief justice of the Punjab and Harayna high court. Justice Mohunta would now administer oath to Kaptan Singh Solanki as Haryana governor on Sunday at 11.30am at Haryana Raj Bhawan.

As per the union law ministry's notification, justice Mohunta was to take over as acting chief justice after the former chief justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul of this high court takes over oath as chief justice of the Madras high court. Justice Kaul was also administered oath of office as chief justice of the Madras high court on Saturday by Tamil Nadu governor K Rosaiah at Raj Bhawan.

Transferred from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh high court, justice Mohunta had taken over oath as judge of Punjab and Haryana high court on June 26. Thereafter, chief justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul had left on July 22 to take over as chief justice of the Madras high court on his transfer.

Since none of the names has got final assent of the central government till date for appointment of chief justice of the Punjab and Haryana high court, justice Mohunta will be taking care as acting chief justice.

The Supreme Court collegium has, however, cleared name of Karnataka high court judge KL Manjunath for appointment as chief justice of Punjab and Haryana high court.

Justice Mohunta was earlier with the Punjab and Haryana high court for around nine years since his elevation as judge in July 2001 and was transferred to the then Andhra Pradesh high court in October 2010.
