A hardcore criminal, Satbir alias Jhabbal whose election as president of the Kaithal truck union has kicked up a row here has claimed that he has bid a farewell to the world of crime after having undergone imprisonment for breaching the law.

Appearing before the media here on Sunday, Jhabbal said he was determined to lead life as a law-abiding citizen. He said traders need not be scared of him and that he would respect professional ethics and not indulge in any unlawful activities.

Jhabbal said he was ready to sit with the traders and discuss any issue with them to allay their fears. He said even in jail, the authorities’ stress was on reforming the convicts. Now that he wanted to join the mainstream, the authorities should help him in his endeavour, Jhabbal said, adding that some politicians were making an issue of his election and were instigating traders to oppose his election. Denying the claims of traders that he had no trucks of his own, Jhabbal said he could produce evidence of his ownership of some trucks.
