Police have arrested a man for murdering his 28-year-old wife at his home at Sheikhupur locality in Kapurthala on Sunday night. The accused, Upinder Sharma, suspected his wife of having an illicit relationship, the police added.

The victim, Sunita, a native of Purnia district in Bihar, was a labourer and the couple have a son and a daughter.

Neighbours of the couple informed the police after some of them saw the body lying in a pool of blood at the couple's house. The area SHO, along with his team, rushed to the spot.

"On the spot, we saw a woman's body lying in a pool of blood with injuries on the head. We also recovered a very heavy branch of a tree from the spot. Prime facie, it seemed the accused, in an inebriated state, killed his wife after hitting her with a tree branch," an official said.

DSP Mohinder Singh said the accused had confessed to killing his wife during interrogation and has been booked under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC.
