A 40-year-old sweetmeat maker allegedly poisoned his wife and their two children to death before hanging himself at Alamgir village near Kala Sanghian in Kapurthala district on Thursday night.
The deceased have been identified as Manohar Lal (40), Rajni (36), Shaili (9) and Tushar (6).
The family, hailing from Changerh village in Amb tehsil of Una district in Himachal Pradesh, had been living at Alamgir for the past few years.
The incident came to light when Manohar’s father-in-law Som Parkash reached the village to meet the family but no one answered the door.
When the door was broken open, the bodies of Rajni, Shalini and Tushar were found lying on the bed while Manohar’s body was hanging from the fan.
The bodies were sent to the Kapurthala civil hospital for post-mortem.
After getting information, SSP Ashish Chaudhary, along with other officials, reached the spot.
DSP Mahinder Singh said the police were yet to register the case and had called up the relatives of the deceased from Una. He said the police were yet to find the reason behind the extreme step. Sources said the police had recovered a suicide note but the police denied this.
