A Karnal court on Friday sent assistant sub-inpsector (ASI) Ram Bhajan Verma, who was one of the nine people booked for abetting suicide of Akhil Chauhan, in two-day police remand. He was arrested on Thursday evening.

Akhil, a resident of Karnal had ended his life on February 1 by consuming poison after being allegedly harassed by the local police at the instance of his in-laws and wife.

Akhil's family and relatives had protested for five days, seeking the arrest of all those booked for abetting the suicide.

The victim's funeral rites were performed on Thursday amid tight police security at the Shivpuri cremation ground in Model Town, Karnal. The same day, victim's wife Priya Verma and father-in-law Vijay Verma had surrendered before the court of chief judicial magistrate (CJM). CJM Amit Garg sent Priya and Vijay in police remand for two and four days, respectively.

The police had registered a case against nine people on the basis of a suicide note recovered from Akhil's pocket. Among the people booked were three cops -inspector Manoj Verma (now suspended), SHO of Karnal's Civil Lines police station Ajit Ram, and ASI Ram Bhajan.
