Upset over poor sanitary condition at the zonal hospital here, Himachal health minister Kaul Singh Thakur on Friday directed the authorities to ensure that the hospital was properly cleaned and leaking pipelines were plugged.

During his surprise visit to the hospital, he also directed the Public Works Department officials to ensure that the under construction building of the ayurveda wing was completed shortly.

Thakur, who was on way to Shimla from Dharamsala, stopped at the hospital along with a team of local Congress leaders.

The hospital authorities, who took him by surprise, accompanied the minister to various wards. The minister also held talks with the hospital staff.

A deputation of the Hospital Welfare Society also met the minister with their demand to grant them permission for a serai (inn) out of the society funds. However, the minister told them that he would hold discussion with the district administration.

Talking to a group of reporters present at the hospital, Thakur said the department was filling posts of medical officers and paramedic staff in the referral units in villages.
