Returning officer-cum-sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Ravinder Singh on Saturday allotted election symbols to those contesting the Khadoor Sahib bypoll as independent candidates.

Meanwhile, Ajit Singh Saini, an independent candidate, withdrew his nomination papers. Now, only seven candidates are left in the fray.

As Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bahujan Samaj Party (Ambedkar) are registered political parties with the election commission, their candidates will contest the bypoll on their respective symbols. Ravinder Singh Brahmpura is representing the ruling SAD, while Puran Singh has been fielded by the Bahujan Samaj Party (Ambedkar).

Rest of the candidates, Bhupinder Singh Bittu (almirah), Sumail Singh Sidhu (whistle), Anantjit Singh Sandhu (sewing machine), Sukhdev Singh Khosla (stool) and Harjit Singh (scissors) will contest as independents.

Election observer Parmod Kumar Gupta, who is overseeing the electoral process, made the candidates aware of the instructions and rules of the election commission. He sought their cooperation in ensuring a free and fair poll.
