A 17-year-old boy murdered a 16-year-old girl in public view and later killed himself by jumping before a train in Khanna on Wednesday.
The girl, Pooja, was a student of Class 10, while the boy, Deep Narayan, had completed matriculation this year. Both lived in the same locality in Khanna. Their parents are labourers.
The girl was returning from school around 2.30pm when Narayan confronted her with a knife in a street and slit her throat. She fell on the road and died on the spot. After killing her, the accused fled from the scene. On being informed, police reached the spot and started an investigation.
Later, cops found Narayan’s body on the railway track. Khanna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Gurpreet Singh Gill said the boy and the girl were neighbours. It is suspected that he took the step after being spurned by the girl. A case of murder has been registered.
