Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (CCSHAU) is likely to confer honorary doctorate degrees on yoga guru Ramdev and Haryana chief minister (CM) Manohar Lal Khattar on its 24th convocation on July 26.
Although university officials are tight-lipped over the issue, they are not categorically refusing the claims either.
"Such things are decided actually in the meeting of the board of management. Sometimes, changes are made at the last minutes," said Atul Dhingra, media advisor and in-charge, HAU.
According to Dhingra, the board management normally meets a day before the convocation to decide on the names.
"Such things are not left for the last moment. The whole programme for convocation gets settled in two meetings of personnel and finance committees (both advisory bodies to the board) organised almost a week before the convocation," sources said.
"Both committees that have some members from the board of management thoroughly discuss on various agendas that are forwarded by various agencies, including academic council, before putting them through for final approval from the board of management," sources said.
Dhingra acknowledged that a personnel committee meeting was held this week only.
"It was in this meeting where names of Ramdev and Khattar were finalised to be sent to the board for final approval," sources said.
The university, in the past, has bestowed the honour upon 16 people, including personalities like former Prime Ministers (PMs) Chaudhary Charan Singh, PV Narasimha Rao, and Manmohan Singh (who was finance minister at that time), former chief minister Bansi Lal and Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
With the former CMs being the last recipients of the prestigious degrees, speculations are rife that even this time round the precedence would be followed.
"Ramdev's active role in World Yoga Day and his affiliation with certain party would get him the degree," sources said.
Meanwhile, chief coordinator, Patanjali Yogpeeth, Haridwar, Jaideep Arya and one of the Hindu devotional television channels by running a ticker at various intervals have confirmed that the yoga guru would attend HAU's convocation on July 26.
