Kidnapped child murdered; suspect held

Husanpreet, 11, a schoolboy kidnapped while playing near his house on Monday was found murdered on Wednesday.

The police recovered his body from a rajbaha (sub canal) near Bariwala village in Muktsar district. The Class-6 student was son of Harnarayan Singh Dhunna of Kotkapura and lived near Jyoti Model School.

Kidnapping suspect Satnam Singh "Jassa", 19, who lived in the boy's neighbourhood, is under arrest. The Kotkapura police had registered a case of kidnapping a day after Husanpreet's family had reported the boy missing. Husanpreet's parents claimed the body on Thursday after autopsy at Muktsar.

The kidnapper is believed to have first lured child with the promise of buying him a treat and a cell phone. "He first tried to abuse the boy sexually and, later, killed him and threw his body into the water channel," said senior superintendent of police Gurinder Singh Dhillon. "We have his cell phone from which he made the ransom calls to the boy's parents after the murder to throw the police off track."

The police are yet to look at the autopsy report, but they claim to have gathered from the suspect that he subjected many other boys to unnatural sex.

Suspect Satnam Singh a matriculate and a carpenter who had worked at the boy's house. The case has moved from the Kotkapura police to the crime investigation agency (CIA) of Faridkot.
