Reeling under the 'pressure' of political leaders of ruling alliance, the city police seem in no mood to arrest the absconding doctor couple in the kidney scam that has rocked the state.
The seven teams, which the police claimed to have dispatched for arresting the couple, have only gone to verify the forged documents attached with the racket and used by donors and recipients in connivance with racket's kingpin Junaid Ahmed Khan.
Seeking anonymity, one of investigation officials said the seven teams from various wings, including economic offence wing, anti-gangster squad, anti-human traffic, have been sent to Kanpur, Delhi, Lucknow, Himachal Pradesh and other places.
The official said till today, not a single team has been formed to arrest the couple due to political pressure.
He said senior officials were not executing the orders of arrests in a bid to give the couple enough time to apply for bail at the Punjab and Haryana high court in Chandigarh.
Further, the officer said the team members were not properly guided and were not accompanied by any gazette-level officer during their raids, due to which it would be difficult for them to get any clue about the recipients and the donors.
"I had requested the senior police officials who are members of special investigation team (SIT) to send at least one gazetted officer with each team, but to no avail," he said, adding some wanted to keep the case "low profile".
Moreover, the official added that deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal might had claimed that ADCP J Elanchezhian would be a part of the special investigation team (SIT), but things have not moved and cops were not in mood to arrest the couple.
On Tuesday, the people in the office of police commissioner remained harried as commissioner was unavailable for the past two days here.
However, police commissioner Yurinder Singh Hayer held a meeting with SIT members, including deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Sandeep Kumar Sharma, ADCP J Elanchezhian, ADCP headquarters Alka Meena, ADCP-II Amrik Singh Powar at his house but officials remained tight-lipped about developments of meetings.
Police commissioner was unavailable for the comments.
Meanwhile, a local court deferred hearing on the bail plea of one of accused Vardaan Chandan Rao, who is Kapurthala jail on Tuesday, till September 14.
