The kin of a 20-year-old woman who eloped with a man of Machhiyan Kalan village allegedly kidnapped the latter's sister after thrashing his parents in broad daylight on Friday morning.

High drama prevailed as the kin, supported by 300 villagers, demanded the return of their daughter to release the kidnapped woman, following which heavy police force was deployed in the village. Even as the police officials tried to resolve the matter, the villagers refused to budge.

A woman from Machhiyan Khurd village had eloped with Gurpreet Bhola, 21, around five days ago, and the woman's kin had filed a complaint with the Meharban police.

Meanwhile, they came to know that the duo got married and had filed a writ petition in Punjab and Haryana High Court for their security.

Enraged over this, the woman's kin, along with over 300 supporters from their village, opened attack on Bhola's family, leaving his father, Roshan Lal, mother Usha Rani, brother Sandeep and aunt Veena Rani injured. The villagers then vandalised the man's house, before kidnapping his sister, Rakesh Rani, 18.

On being informed, the police reached the spot and initiated investigation. They held several meetings with the kin of the eloped woman to release Rani, but in vain.

Sub-inspector Rajesh Thakur, station house officer (SHO) at Meharban police station, said the police were investigating the matter to register a case.
