Sandeep Kumar of Kotkapura, father of a girl, 11, who has charged a middle-aged man with molestation and intrusion in the house, on Saturday alleged that his family was afraid of being implicated in a false case at the behest of the suspect.
"The police tried to delay the arrest of the suspect under political pressure since the lodging of the first-information report (FIR) on February 20," said Kumar. On Friday, the man surrendered in a city police station at Kotkapura after the Punjab and Haryana high court turned down his bail application after a local court had issued the same order on March 4.
Kumar issued a written statement to the media on Saturday, in which he claimed that the suspect's family had threatened to kidnap his daughter unless he made a compromise. "A senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is behind the plot," Kumar stated.
Kumar took representations to the senior superintendent of police at Farikdot that his family was under threat but no action has followed, so far. "Instead, the police called us to the police station on Friday night and we are afraid they might slap a cross case against my uncle, brother, cousin, and me."
The minor was molested at her home and her father has said the BJP is shielding the suspect. SSP Gurpreet Singh Toor confirmed having arrested the suspect and that he had charged the victim's family with beating him up. "We are verifying," he said. "We have registered no case against the victim's family yet."
