Angered over the mystery death of 24-year-old Satinder Pal Singh and his subsequent cremation by the police without identification, the kin of the deceased led by his mother Rajinder Kaur, and wife Manmeet Kaur held a protest and blocked traffic on the National Highway 1, on Saturday. The protesters were demanding action against the cops, alleging that Satinder had died in police custody.
Late on Friday night, the victim's kin and residents of Gobind Nagar had held a demonstration outside Sultanwind police station after the news of his death and cremation reached them. In response, the police suspended an ASI, Jatinder Singh, for negligence.
The protesters alleged that Satinder had died in police custody and his body was cremated in a hurry to hush up the matter, the police officials termed the allegations as 'baseless'. The police, however, admitted 'negligence' of the cops in the matter. Police officials claimed that the body of the youth, who had not been identified by that time, was recovered from the banks of the canal near the bypass.
The police said that they had completed all the formalities and the 'unidentified' body was cremated after the post-mortem. The identity of the victim was established from the documents found in his scooter, which was later recovered by the police from near the spot where his body was found, said police officials.
Sources said that the police then approached the family of Satinder. SP (city 1) Shailender Singh Shally, who talked to the protesters, said that an inquiry would be held into the matter.
